Is Laser Hair Removal Worth It? An Honest Guide (And What to Expect)

The short answer? If you're tired of shaving every two days, waxing every three weeks, or dealing with ingrown hairs — yes. Here's the full honest truth about laser hair removal, what actually happens, and whether it's right for you.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal uses targeted pulses of light to destroy hair follicles at the root. Over a course of 6-8 sessions (typically 4-6 weeks apart), you can expect a 70-90% permanent reduction in hair growth in the treated area.

It's not magic. It's science. And done properly by a trained specialist with a medical-grade machine, it's the most effective long-term hair removal method available.

How does it actually work?

The laser targets the pigment (melanin) in your hair. When a hair is in its active growth phase, the laser energy is absorbed by the pigment and converts to heat. The heat damages the follicle so it can't produce hair again.

This is why it takes multiple sessions — at any given time, only about 20-30% of your hair is in the active growth phase. Each session targets a different batch of follicles.

Realistic results

Most clients see 70-90% permanent reduction after 6-8 sessions. The remaining hair is usually finer, lighter, and less noticeable. Occasional top-up sessions (once every 6-12 months) maintain results.

Is it painful?

You'll feel a sensation most clients describe as a "warm elastic band snap". Modern machines like ours have built-in cooling that makes treatment far more comfortable than laser 10 years ago. Most areas are tolerable without numbing cream.

Tender areas (bikini line, upper lip) are more sensitive. We can discuss numbing cream at your consultation if needed.

What areas can be treated?

At Pop of Beauty we treat all the common areas:

  • Full legs / half legs
  • Underarms
  • Bikini line / Brazilian / Hollywood
  • Upper lip, chin, facial hair
  • Arms / forearms
  • Back and chest (popular with men)
  • Stomach

Does it work on everyone?

Laser works best on dark hair on lighter skin because the laser targets pigment. But modern machines can treat a wide range of skin tones safely — just not very blonde, red or white hair (there's no pigment for the laser to target).

At your free consultation we'll assess your hair and skin type and let you know honestly what results to expect.

How long does each session take?

Depends on the area:

  • Upper lip / chin: 5-10 minutes
  • Underarms: 10-15 minutes
  • Bikini: 15-20 minutes
  • Full legs: 45-60 minutes

What to do before your appointment

  1. Shave the area 24-48 hours before — laser targets the follicle, not surface hair. Don't wax or pluck for 4 weeks before (it removes the follicle target).
  2. No sun exposure or fake tan 2 weeks before. Tanned skin can't be treated safely.
  3. Arrive with clean, product-free skin — no deodorant, no lotion.

What to expect during

You'll wear protective goggles. The practitioner glides the laser over your skin in sections. You'll feel warm pulses. Most sessions are quick, comfortable, and easy.

After the treatment

  • Mild redness for a few hours (similar to mild sunburn)
  • Don't expose the area to direct sun for 2 weeks
  • No hot showers, saunas or intense workouts for 24 hours
  • Use SPF 50+ on exposed areas between sessions

"I stopped shaving my legs for the first time in 20 years. Six sessions. No regrets."

Is it worth the money?

A full course of laser on legs typically costs £600-£1200 in the UK. Sounds like a lot until you count what you're currently spending:

  • Waxing legs every 3 weeks at £35 = £600+/year, every year
  • Razors, shaving cream, time = £200-300/year
  • Ingrowns, skin irritation, stubble days = a lifetime of hassle

Laser pays for itself in under 2 years and you stop thinking about hair removal.
